Hi everyone. Mr. Lange from Hollywood High School here. I hope you are having a good summer You are receiving this email because you are or may be taking AP Calculus next school year. I want everyone to get the best possible grades when we start up in September, and more importantly, I want this class to make news by being one of the most successful classes on the AP test next April. This will not be easy and we’ll have to do good work to make it happen, including staying in good mathematical shape over the summer. I have attached the official Summer Packet Assignment as a .pdf file. You need Acrobat Reader to open it. It is a free download. If you can’t download the packet… It is on the hollywoodhighschool.net SAS summer assignment website Print it out and work on it throughout the summer. Email me at slange@lausd.net if you have any questions about it. Bring it to class on the first day of school for some kind of grade. It will be worth it. The bottom line is this: You won’t find much success in Calculus if you prepared to work hard and aren’t well practiced in your algebra and precalculus skills, so you need to practice! I will give a Calculus Readiness Test on one of the first days of school testing your prior knowledge. There are other ways to practice and prepare as well. I suggest doing the testing program at www.khanacademy.org for example. It starts out with basic skills of addition and works through all sorts of required math. It’s fun. Try it. Challenge a friend. I can email you a tracker to keep track of how well you are doing if you email me. I can also give you a summer account at ALEKS.com Ms. Burnham’s class used it successfully last year. It tests where you are and then makes you practice the things you need to learn, so it’s not boring. Again, email me if you want to do it and I’ll set up an account. Soon, you will also have email addresses at my website, www.mrlangemath.com. Visit the calculus section of the webpage and check out the syllabus and the resources for calc as well as precalc as a way to study. You will get more emails soon. For now, print out the packet and get started. Bye for now. Mr. Lange
