1. A commercial says that 4 out of 5 dentists prefer Crest Toothpaste. You are a skeptical statistician. Should you trust them? What do you think? What questions would you ask of the Crest people to find out the truth? What concerns might you have?
2. The scientists at Viagra have made a new pill that they think will make “you know whats” last longer. You work for the drug company. Explain how you would design a test to figure out if the new pill is really better.
3. Explain one example of a real life relationship that would have a strong positive linear correlation. One with a weak negative correlation. And one with no correlation.
4. You work for a political candidate. The candidate only cares about the public’s opinions in making up his mind. The candidate wants to know if he should support an increase in sales tax in his district to pay for a high speed train line. How would you help the candidate decide, using what you have learned?
5. A coin is tossed 10 times and it comes up heads 7 times. Is it a fair coin. What if it was tossed 100 times and came up heads? Is it fair? Use statistical reasoning to explain.
6. Standard Deviation is one of the most important concepts in Statistics and performing tests of inference. Why is it so important? Try to give an example.
7. Do you believe in global warming? What statistical reasonings are there for global warming- explain? What statistical reasonings are there to be skeptical?
8. Make up a theoretical normal distribution, including mean and standard deviation. What are you measuring? How would you determined whether an individual in the distribution is “normal” or not. Be specific in your example.
9. How are statistics and polls being used to analyze the validity of Iran’s elections. Use the internet to find sources. http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/ is a great place to start.
